Subject: Education in Honduras
Message:

This is a very sad subject. I think we spent the first two years misunderstanding the struggle between teachers and government. I thought the teachers were striking to demand pay raises. This year, anyway, public school teachers have not been paid in six months (basically the whole school year). Therefore my opinion of teacher has shifted from greedy to sainthood. Who in the world would continue to work for six months without pay? Please pray for Honduras. I do not know from where the money comes to pay teachers where half the population is under 18 years old. I know there is a lot of corruption here reaching the highest levels of government. Regardless of the reasons, this country is setting its youth up for failure. Schools cannot run without teachers. Teachers cannot work without pay. Although currently we do not have authority to give our boys diplomas, we really have no choice but to educate them at home. To send them to school would be to doom their futures.
