"Why are they doing that?" "I don't understand why they would do that." These are some of the questions we hear secondhand referring to our mission in Honduras. These questions really drive home the scripture I've been studying as I read through the Book of John. In John, Jesus explains that his disciples are not of this world. Spiritually, they are born from above. John 14:16-18 "And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you foreveró the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you." It does hurt when people that are close to us question why someone would help orphans. I realize that much of their concern is for our children and how this move will affect them. Perhaps some of their concern is about our own future and careers. I'd like to offer my point of view. First and foremost, the Lord put this seed in my heart; that I would help the poor and disciple others on doing the same. I realized that the seed was there before my tenth birthday although it might have been there eons before my birth. Secondly, I really have to think beyond the world view of career and retirement. Every christian should think beyond 10-20 years of living after careers fade. I do not believe in that type of retirement, but that's just a personal opinion. I know that I need to save for the day that I am no longer physically or mentally able to generate income and I am doing so. That will take care of the decade or two of "retirement". But what about eternity? That is the real retirement. That is when we retire from this world and we are judged according to our works (Matthew 25:31-46). Please understand that I by no means believe everyone should give up their professional careers to work at an orphanage. That is not what I am saying. I am saying that the Lord has called me to help the poor and I dare not flee his call and my own heart's desire.
