I emailed this a few weeks ago but many have said that they couldn't read it.  Here is what is was.

Ok......this is a start at trying to put some bones to something that has been in my heart and head for YEARS.  I am going to lay it out (this is a very rough layout, but I have been prompted to begin) and then explain a little bit more.  Most of these thoughts have come from different places that I have played with my children, or have heard of.  Truly not my original creative ideas, just ideas from different avenues put together, ex. science museums, kids clubhouse, recreation centers, etc.   I share this with you at this stage 1) to ask for prayer and 2) if any of these resonates in your spirit, contact me with ways you could help/participate/support/cooperate.

I am going to try to put some words to my thoughts and heart regarding our community center.  First off, tutoring for local elementary school kids starts when school starts.......we will do that 2 afternoons a week.  This is coordinated with the local teachers, they recommend the children that need to come.  They will send the child with a note of what they need to work on.  The child can come without a note, but we want to support our local teachers and be a help to the local elementary school.  We offer help in all subjects and are open to tutoring a small number of older students (jr. high and high school).  We are thrilled to have a few great Honduran volunteers to help us, a woman and a local youth.

Then.........we have many books in Spanish coming and I want to create a reading room.  We had $1000 with which to buy books.  I did my best on Amazon.  I bought pictures books, board books, and chapter books.  Only after I spent it all did I think about Scholastic.....oh well, next time. Here is what I see....A corner of the huge building being painted warmly.  There would be giant easy to clean bean bag chairs (vinyl or something that can be wiped off), fuzzy rugs, shelving for books, and good lighting  All would be set up to be a warm place for the kids to come and read at certain times.  This will be open during tutoring. We see starting as a reading room, with the hope to train children to care for books so that we could eventually have a check out policy.

Then, here is the hard to explain but the vision I have had for years.........An imaginative, creative, space for kids to come and be.   Decor would include a wall of local children's art, maybe a mural, scripture, etc.   I see different areas set up for the children to enjoy.  As this is the rough layout, I don't yet know if all of these centers would be going at one time, or only a few.  My desire is to have all of the centers open, with a staff person at each center encouraging the children and participating with them.

    1)  Art/Crafts- with all the supplies for the kids to freely create with many different mediums.  All set up in a kid friendly manageable way.  Things such as sculpting, painting, drawing, crafting, even sewing, etc. There would be binders with different ideas to do but also just space to be free about it.  There could be bins of junk for them to create from. It would be stocked with different papers, colors, pencils, easels, tables, chairs, etc.

    2)  Lego station/Marbleworks - I  know that boys love to create with these as well as girls and it is just something kids here don't get to do. I would love for the children to be able to build things and experiment.  These could easily be kept in tubs with lids.

    3) Music -  This area could be set up with kareoke, things to make homemade musical instruments with, easy instruments to make music with.  There could be biinders with simple music to do on recorders, xylophones, triangles, drums, etc.  This station would require a great volunteer, but could be such a blessing.  I can just imagine a child experiencing the restorative power of music.

    4)  Dance/movement- There would be all kinds of things to dance with. Music would be playing, there would be things to dress up in, etc.

    5) Dress up - this being focused on different careers.  There would be tubs of dress up!

    6)  Science -  a science lab of sorts with binders of  simple experiments for them to do.  There could be things like magnets, electronics kits, old machines to take apart (like radios, phones, fans, etc.)  Oh I can think of a million things for this one.

  •

    7) Blocks/car center- a center with big rug, blocks to build things with and tons of matchbox cars to play with

  •
  •

    8)  Home center - play kitchen, babies, brooms, mops, etc. to play home in.  There could be a dollhouse and things for baby care.

  •
  •

    9)  Games - This would be a center of board games for all ages.

So that is a shell.  It would be open to kids at set times.  I see interns helping it run, and some of my local older youth from my village/church helping also.  It could be a great place for teams to work in, it could be a wonderful opportunity for Honduran youth groups to help with, a great place for teachers, etc.

This part of the community center could be open 1 day a week, or as often as we have enough help to have it open.  Children could earn time there with progress in school.   There are many possibilities there.

The overall heart of the project is a safe place for children to play, imagine, dream, and hear of the love of our Creator.  I have so many ideas that could work with this.

I am sharing this because I need your help.  As I said before 1) we need your prayers, prayers for timing, prayers for helpers, prayers for finances, prayers for wise planning, etc. and 2)if this is something that you want to be a part of how can you help?  In my mind I see churches, school classes,  groups taking on one of the centers and either buying the things or giving the money to do so.  Many people can give much more insight and ideas.  Some can come and help, some can help send others.  There are many ways to be involved.
