Subject: Mother's Day In Honduras
Message:

It's that time of year again. Time to celebrate the absolute heart of every family, good ol Ma. Motherhood is no cakewalk and having one day a year for the mothers in our lives is not near enough for the amount of life they pour into us.

In Honduras, motherhood has some nuances that Americans are not accustomed to.

First and foremost, most mothers here are alone. 52% of the homes here have only one parent, most of them being mothers. Add extreme poverty to this and you understand how things might be difficult.

Aside from the socioeconomics, Mother's Day presents some additional challenges. Although schools mean well, their children are given projects such as sewing a pillow embroidered with something about "Mom". For the most part, mothers end up adding these projects to their other daily challenges of making some corn and beans feed the family, cleaning clothes and the home in addition to completing a lot of the homework that the children don't know how to do.

Then there are the Mother's Day celebrations that schools put on. Imagine four to six hours sitting out in the sun under highly humid conditions. It's a matter of culture here to set meetings an hour before they actually begin. Most people begin showing up thirty minutes after the appointed time and the actual meeting, party or celebration does not begin until everyone has a good chance to visit. The American in us does not take that well, as we have been raised with the belief that "Time is money". With that underlying precept, we make time and money our gods. Don't get me wrong, I still have a hard time waiting an extra hour, but that's my problem.

For me, Mother's Day in Honduras looks exhausting, for the mothers. Then again, I'm not a mother and probably can't comprehend what joy these things bring.
