Subject: Post Apocolyptic

There is a genre of movies that seems to have a mass audience. The genre has never held my interest and it was only a few years ago that I identified what they had in common. In each of these post apocolyptic films, there was an event in the past that ended civilization as we know it. Humans are typically still fighting, but a hero rises up to unite the people.

This morning I read a headline about the Hunger Games franchise expecting $120M in its opening weekend. Mad Max was another big hit this year. I think this shows that most of us believe that society will fail and that we are headed for disaster. At the same time, the common belief falls short. We fail to see that the enemy is spiritual. We fail to see that the redeemer will not be a human hero.

It was only recently that I realized why these movies do not appeal to me. Aside from the fact that the movies seem hopeless, depressing, they also seem to conflict with my beliefs.

I do believe that there will be conclusion to the human race, a finish line. As in the movies, the final part of the race will be littered with casualties and destruction. Through it all though, those who believe in someone far greater than any of us, all of us, will stand the test. Our bodies may fail, but we will live on.

There will be no human hero to pick up the pieces of a shattered world. There will be a New Heaven and a New Earth. Christ will rule and there will be no darkness, no death, no sadness, no crying and no pain for those who put their trust and faith in him.

-Revelation 21
