Subject: New Orphans
Message:

We have not received any new children this year. Unfortunately, we have three new orphans. I went to IHNFA (something like our child protective services) today to collect birth certificates for some of the boys. While I was there, I was offered remorse for the mother that passed away. They looked surprised that I did not know about it. The mother of Fernando, Arnol and Carlitos died two months ago. Thankfully Fernando did not come with us today. I must tell him and Arnol this evening when we return. Im not sure how they will take it. I dont think they ever beleived they would return to her. Nor did they ever show much affection towards her. She, like many Hondurans, had lost hope. With so much poverty and so many broken families, she turned to alcohol. Im not sure of the exact cause of death, but I believe the director told me it had something to do with her heart and blamed the alcohol. The mother had asked to visit us early this month, but did not show up. The no-show was not a surprise as she had missed a few visits before. I was quite shocked and my heart fell. Carlitos is too young to understand anything about his mother. In fact, he uses the term "mommy" to address Paula and Xiomara. I only pray that the boys can break through the cycle of poverty and not leave any woman in the same position as their mother. Fathers are a rare commodity in Honduras.
