Yesterday morning I was on my way to a meeting at the older boys high school (colegio at Pablo Weir). I was thinking about retreats and how the Lord often withdrew from people to speak with his and our Father. Now that, sir, was a retreat. I have been on retreats before, but some of them were a little heavy on organized activity and light on retreat. Often times I think if we could just stop the world, pray and think for awhile, we could overcome any problem we face. All too often we get out of bed and step right into the whirlwind of life. What is a whirlwind? The American Heritage Dictionary likens a whirlwind to a tornado or dust devil. If you've ever seen a dust devil or tornado, you'll notice that they spin extremely fast, but don't have a constant direction and move slower than they spin. When we operate on the world's schedule we are extremely busy and barely move or achieve anything. John 15:5 "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." When we begin our day with prayer and devotion to God, we actually do step out of this world, where time stops and God speaks. We can achieve virtually anything. We certainly will bear much fruit. A few moments after my meeting at the school, I met a missionary at the repair shop. I had not met him before. We spoke a bit and I asked what he was doing nowadays. He said he was building a retreat center. Yes, sometimes if we stop and listen to the Lord, we can hear his voice. I believe a retreat should definitely involve corporate prayer, praise and worship. But I also believe a retreat should break into groups that focus on the problems we face. We should pray together, seek the Lord, ask for answers and listen. We should also climb higher. We should climb the mountain of the Lord and ask for answers to problems beyond our own busy lives. For example, how do we witness to our neighbors? How can we help in our community? Who should we help? How can we as brothers and sisters touch more lives? We should think on things eternal instead of worrying about our own needs, which the Lord has said he would take care of.
