Subject: Word of the Week: Frijoles

This week we have been harvesting our crop of beans. If I had to guess, I'd say we easily have over 1000 pounds. We planted just over an acre of beans. Some of the beans are red beans, some are black beans.     You can imagine that picking an acre of beans is a lengthy task. We pull the plant from the ground, tie several up together and then hang the bundle over a rope or fence to dry. They will dry for a few weeks before we remove them from the pods and store them in our metal drums.      It has been really great to see all the boys and our children pitching in on the beans. The big boys pull the plants up. The little boys pick the piles up, put them in a wheelbarrow and cart them over to the girls and others to tie in bundles. Then some of the boys take them to hang and dry.      As soon as the beans are removed, we will fertilize and plant some corn for the animals. The corn should be "green ready" in about three months. If we choose to dry some of them, the corn will stay on the stalk for a couple months more to dry in the sun. During the dry season, much food is needed to keep the animals healthy.
