Subject: Inspection Day

IHNFA (the child protective service in Honduras funded by the United Nations) will be inspecting us today. We are told that a new leader has been selected and has some new rules for orphanages. Probably the biggest change is that they now require every child in every orphanage to have a six month psychological evaluation. This will be a hardship for many homes as the orphanage must pay for the evaluation. In our case, Jim Faber shopped around and found a psychologist that would come to the home for the evaluations. The cost will be $508 (9600 Lempiras). I'm not sure what else has changed until they come and tell us what new rules we might be violating. IHNFA was so pleased with our improvements in 2006 that they did not visit us once in 2007. Problem is that there are really no printed laws to follow. You basically wait until they tell what you are doing wrong. The same goes for labor laws. You don't know what your obligations are or what you might owe an employee until they complain to the labor ministry. The hardware store seems to be rolling along pretty well. Jose is always looking for smart ways to expand. The store is already profitable thanks to Jose and his wife Lourdais. We've updated our projects/goals for 2008. Click above on the "Projects" link to take a look. My mother is here and is busy being a grandmother to everyone including the boys. Right now she is reading to Eli, Reynaldo and Carlitos. I need to go and help the boys with school. We were on Winter Break until my mother left, but IHNFA wants a show.
